Speed up External USB Hard Drives in Windows Vista How To Tip:
If you have many external hard drives like me, or just one that's always plugged into your computer, you can enable write caching to speed up performance significantly when writing to the disk.
The write caching isn't enabled by default for USB external drives because removable devices could lose data if you unplug them too quickly, so take care when using this setting. And use the Safely Remove Hardware in your Windows System Tray to close/shut download the USB external hard drive before you unplug it.

Go to Device Manager to change this setting, just type Device Manager into the start menu search box, and hit enter. Or right click on My Computer, click on Properties on the menu, in System Properties click on Hardware Tab, the Device Manager, Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware Tab>Device Manager. See picture below.

Now browse down to the external USB hard drive that you wish to enable write caching on, Now double click it to open up the USB Device properties screen. See picture below.

Now change the setting to "Optimize for performance" and hit OK to button to continue. You will need to reboot your computer for the setting to take effect. That's it!
