Installing Memory (RAM) in to your Pc Tech Support, it's easy! One of the fastest and easiest why's to speed-up your Pc is to install more Pc memory. Some of the bigger Pc store now offer free memory install if you buy the pc memory from them but, you have to leave your Pc with them for a few weeks. Why wait a week or two to get your Pc memory installed, when you can do it yourself in ten minutes. The information on this page will show you how to do it yourself. Remember you can get more Pc how to's here!

Installing pc memory in to a computer for me is as easy as putting postage stamps on mail. I know it can be confusing for you if you never installed pc memory before, so I will make this as easy as passable for you. I will explain the steps you need to fallow to identify the type of memory your need and how to install memory in your own Pc. Even if you decide not to install memory in to your Pc yourself you will understand the process.

These instructions will work for the majority of PCs running Microsoft Windows, But because Pc's vary too much for this guide to fit all computers. Remember: If possible, do your installation in an uncarpeted area. Try to be careful and not to touch any chips, and touch as little as possible on the inside your computer.

Tech information: Memory often is called RAM, for random access memory. Main memory is called RAM because you can randomly (as opposed to sequentially) access any location in memory. When we talk about a computer’s memory, we usually mean the RAM or physical memory in the system, which is primarily the memory chips or modules used by the processor to store primary active programs and data. This often is confused with the term storage, which should be used when referring to things such as disk and tape drives (although they can be used as a form of RAM called virtual memory).

People new to computers often confuse main memory (RAM) with disk storage because both have capacities that are expressed in similar megabyte or gigabyte terms. The best analogy to explain the relationship between memory and disk storage. Ram memory is temporary and disk storage is long term.

Remember if your computer is under manufacturer's warranty, if you modifying the computer that usually ends that warranty. If you lack good dexterity or do not understand these instructions, have a qualified technician install the memory for you. Install computer Memory! | add more computer ram memory to your pc. Remember come back to WebTechGeek.com for more computer help tips and How To's.

The Steps: Install computer Memory! | add more computer ram memory to your pc.

1. You should shut down (Turn off) your computer, unplug your computer power cable. You can leave or disconnect all peripheral devices, such as your monitor, scanner, from the your PC. I leave all devices and cables plugged in and unplug the power cable only. Because it only takes me one minute to install a memory stick and twenty minutes to unplug and re-plug all peripheral devices and cables. Related how to choose the right amount of RAM page.

2. Now you need to remove the computer's cover, read your computer manual if you don't know how to remove the Pc cover. This is a good time to take a good look inside your computer. If it's dirty and full of dust you may want to unplug all cables and take it outside and blow it clean with a can of compressed air. You can buy cans of compressed air from favorite computer store or from the Internet. Related how to clean your Computer tip page.

3. The computer is power off and the power cable is unplug and the cover is removed. You may want to lay you computer on it's side, this will make it easer to work on.

4. You need to ground yourself (removes static) before you handle your memory stick. I do this by touching the metal part of the computer case. You can do the same as I do or you can buy yourself professional grounding equipment at your favorite computer store it will cost you about $25 dollars. WebTechGeek.com

5. Locate the memory module(s) you wish to remove. Push down on the latches, located on both sides of the module, to gently eject it from the slot. Grasp one edge of the module and lift it out. Store the module in a static-free bag.

Note: Gently handle the memory module by the sides only. Avoid touching the pins located at the bottom edge of the memory module.

6. Look at label on the memory module the label on the memory module should read the type of memory your computer uses. For instance 256MB PC 3200 400MHz DIMM, if you can't read the label read your user manual that came with your computer to find the type of memory module to uses. If you have a 128MB memory module installed and you want 256MB of RAM you need to install another 128MB memory module to equal 256MB of RAM. You should install one or pairs of 128, 256, 512, etc memory modules. Install computer Memory! | add more computer ram memory to your pc.

With some computer systems you can't mix the memory modules, you should try to keep memory module equal. In stall two 128MB or two 256MB rather then one 128MB and a 512MB. Read the computer users manual that came with your computer for more information on memory module for your Pc.

Buying Memory Module (RAM): You can also look here crucial.com or kingston.com for the type of memory module your computer uses by manufacturer. If your looking for the lowest price on memory on the Internet try here pricewatch.com.

7. Installing the memory module: Remove the memory module from its anti-static package, handling it by the the edges.

8. Locate the notch on the bottom edge of the module to align it over the open memory slot.

9. Firmly insert the bottom edge of the memory module into the slot.

10. Press down evenly against the module's upper corners. The end latches snap into position, holding the module in place. To avoid damaging a memory module slot, move the end latches slightly outward to relieve pressure. The module clicks into place.

11. Reinstall any components or cables add-on you may have removed. Replace the screw that secures the power supply to the chassis. Replace the side panel. That's it your finished. You can start your computer. Remember to come back to WebTechGeek.com for more How To's. Related how to Optimize performance for disk drives.
