Set Up E-mail Filters - Tech Support Page

You need e-mail filters to block spam, or junk e-mail, and other unwanted e-mail messages by automatically deleting them on the fly. You can use Filters to sort incoming messages into particular folders on your computer. If your using Microsoft Outlook, open the Tools menu, select Message Rules, and then Mail, or open Message and select Create Rules for Message. In Netscape Messenger, the filters are found under the Message Filters command in the Edit menu.

You can select multiple conditions for the same filter, such as mail from Smith with Company Accounts in the header. Read your e-mail program's Help file it contains more information about customizing mail filters. Try to avoid overly general e-mail filters, filtering e-mail from "Geek" means you might miss e-mail from other Geeks. You can also block messages from a particular sender or domain, see # 6. below. Remember to come back to WebTechGeek.com for more How To's!

The Steps:

1. You need to open your e-mail program. And locate the Filters section, usually found under Edit, Options or Tools on the menu bar.

2. You need to click New and type the name of the new filter. Try to make it's easy to remember, such as Spam E-mail or Junk E-mail.

3. Now enter the filter rules, or conditions. The conditions are requirements the e-mail must meet. A good example, the e-mail sender is Tom Smith or the subject includes the words Fast Money! in order for the action of deleting the message to take place.

4. Now select the action you want the e-mail program to perform with the e-mail filtered. You can move it to another folder, or delete it, or request other actions, it depending on the mail program you are using.

5. Now to Save your new filter click on OK.

6. To block messages from a sender or domain You can block messages from a particular sender or domain. The domain is the name following the @ symbol in an e-mail address. When you block a sender or domain, no e-mail message from that sender will arrive in your Inbox. E-mail from blocked senders goes directly into your Delete folder. From your e-mail Inbox or the list of messages in a newsgroup, select a message from a sender you want to block. On the Message menu, click Block Sender.

Notes: Blocking a sender applies to standard POP mail only. It does not apply to HTTP mail (Hotmail) or IMAP messages. To remove a name from the Blocked Senders list, click the Tools menu, point to Message Rules, and then click Blocked Senders List. Hotmail users can add name to the Blocked Senders list. Remember to come back to WebTechGeek.com for more How To's.
