WinMX

WinMX - is a file sharing utility that connects to various servers. WinMX allows you to connect, download, and share files with MILLIONS of other users through the decentralized WinMX Peer Network. You can share media files, graphic files and other types of media. This client is extremely easy to use; simply install it and the server list pops up immediately on startup. Connect to a server and start searching for files!

It allows you to simultaneously connect to many established networks based on the OpenNap and Napster protocols. This means more users and more search results than other sharing programs. It also supports any file type, allowing you access to a diverse assortment of shared video and picture files as well as the usual mp3 audio files.

You connection to the network happens as soon as you start the program. The connection window has changed from the last version. Whereas before it displayed an entire list of all the servers its connecting to, this time they've made it look a lot more user-friendly simply by telling you when the program has connected to a server so you can being searching for media.

The search window is completely packed with options by which you can search by. You can search for simply Audio / Video / Pictures, or you can be more specific in what you are looking for and search for MP3 Audio (any bitrate), or MP3 Audio (specified bitrate),

The results are displayed fairly quickly after you make a search, and there is quite a bit of information available on the searched files, bitrate and all.

XoloX

XoloX enables you to exchange any type of files through the Internet with anyone who is online. XoloX combines Napster's ease of use with reliability. Xolox is fast, user-friendly software that enables peer-to-peer file sharing on the Gnutella network.

XoloX is another Gnutella client. There are many other Gnutella clients on the net, such as BearShare, LimeWire and Gnotella, but this one, is quite different. The first thing I noticed about it Xolox is how small the client was - only about 600k. That means you can run this program in the background without eating a load of your memory.

The Search facility is also easy to use, but does lack some detail. You may search for different types of media, such as Audio or Video or whatever, but its disappointing that XoloX doesn't incorporate extra info. Such as the bitrate of MP3s, which BearShare has started to do.

Pros: XoloX, one of the best Gnutella client is back! Probably the fastest gnutella client. Easy to use, User friendly, Multi-source downloads for a Gnutella client, Resumable downloads.

KaZaA

 

Search, download, and interact with a variety of files with this P2P file-transfer application. The latest version of KaZaA keeps the original functionality but makes a number of improvements to address user complaints and KaZaA's own business opportunities.

Of the eight main KaZaA toolbar buttons, two are indispensable. The search function lets you configure your search with a good number of filters to help you find what you are looking for, whether it's music, video, software, pictures, documents, or any other type of computer file. KaZaA's huge user base means you are likely to find what you want.

The Traffic function lets you monitor the progress of your downloads and see what other people are downloading from you. Adding a Euro twist, KaZaA's interface is available in French, German, and Spanish, in addition to English.

Some people might find KaZaA's Theatre function useful, although most file swappers already have preferred playback software. The Start screen is simply a browser window for information about KaZaA, and the Rip/Copy/Burn button launches a browser-based advertisement. Along with KaZaA's own banner ad window, Cydoor will launch the occasional pop-up ad.

A component called Altnet causes some search results to display gold icons. Companies pay KaZaA to put these listings on the network, though KaZaA makes no distinction whether the files are pay-per-use, ad-supported, or demo versions.

Pros : Large user base - Very user friendly - Internal media players - Fast downloads - Easy connection to server - Multi-Source downloads.

Cons : Limited MP3 bitrate searches, Memory hog - to run program, Limited search result displayed, Spyware installed!

The program uses a proprietary peer-to-peer protocol to share files among users on the network.

New MusicCity Morpheus 2.0 Morpheus is a full-featured and easy-to-use P2P application that allows users to share content across the Morpheus Users Network. It utilizes open protocols established by the Gnutella developers, and enables users to directly communicate with each other and search for any type of digital file across the network. Users can control CPU utilization, word filters, upload limits, and file sharing. It also simultaneously transfers content files from multiple sources for fast downloads of large files, even from users with slower connection speeds.

Morpheus used to be one of the best servers out there for these reasons. Ease of use, Fast downloads/searches, Availability of files. All of these reasons are now not applicable with the Morpheus/KaZaa network. The new version you log on and do nothing no files.

Pros : Quite a few files available, Resumable Downloads, No spyware.

Cons: - Too buggy, Searches can be slow, not the Morpheus we used to know and love, Downloads can be slow, There are better Gnutella Clients out there

Audiogalaxy: Rreviewed by WebTechGeek.com - Description, The Next Napster "NOT" - Audiogalaxy Satellite is a small and simple program that allows you to share your music with friends and other users on Audiogalaxy. Audiogalaxy Satellite is a real-time, transaction-based file-sharing system for MP3 users.

Get music by using the search engine and selecting the songs which your Satellite will try to get from other Satellites. In the windows version you will know that the AG Satellite is running when the Audiogalaxy logo appears on your system tray (lower right corner of your screen).

Features: Auto-resuming: Never worry about resuming incomplete files. Once somebody comes online with the file you requested your partially downloaded file will automatically resume even if its not the original person you downloaded from. Requesting offline files: If nobody is currently sharing the file you want, select it anyway because once somebody comes online with that file you will automatically start downloading it from them. The Audiogalaxy Satellite is a small lightweight program that uses little CPU and memory. It's OK, but it's no Napster!

NOTE: Audio Galaxy has since become a victim of the RIAA and has ALL songs blocked from its servers. A big loss in the file-sharing community...

RIP!

Napster officially dead: Most of Napster's remaining 42 employees have been laid off, and visitors to the Napster home page found a stark message: "Napster was here."

Napster: Reviewed by Raymond, WebTechGeek - Napster for Windows is dead for now but, it way the best and the first MP3 file sharing program I used RIP! Before Napster I would download MP3's from Newsgroups (and still do) or trade MP3's by email with friends.

Napster a company whose name has become synonymous with free music online, adopted a plan to charge money for its popular service. Napster is a Internet search tool that lets you search for and download songs in MP3 and .wma formats. By creating a virtual community of people who want to share music, the program ensures a vast collection of audio files for download.

It also eliminates the problems of conventional FTP transferring by using special technology to ensure the completion of each file transfer. Nearly every file I wanted downloaded successfully. You'll also find advanced search functions, the ability to chat with other Napster users, a built-in audio player, interface customization capabilities, and playlist and library tools. When searching online for songs, you can specify the minimum server ping (response) times as well as MP3 bit rates and frequency.

Update - Napster Usage Nosedives 90 Percent: Users will look for new ways of obtaining free music online, rather than signing up for a subscription, study finds. Napster's numbers are shrinking. The average number of files being shared on the MP3-swapping service has dropped 90 percent in the last three months, and may be closed at this time.

The record industry charges Napster with violating federal and state laws through copyright infringement. A victory for the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Pros: FAST, The best MP3 file sharing program at the time! Easy to use, you can download most all of the MP3s you pick. Just type in the MP3 file name and get back a list of hundreds of Mp3 files to download.

Cons: You have to Register to use it, Napster will start charging money for the service. Napster is dead at this time, RIP!

Gnutella!

Gnutella: Reviewed by Raymond, WebTechGeek.com - This is true peer to peer, and it cannot be killed. It's nothing like Napster for simplicity. I had a hard time downloading files from Gnutella. I also had trouble connecting to an active server using Gnutella. It took me three tires to connect on to an active server.

Gnutella can be use to download almost everything from random MP3 to movies. If you use Gnutella beware that it does hog bandwidth. Gnutella does NOT work as soon as you start it. You need to find an ACTIVE SERVER to use it. But there are plenty! If napster shut down there's always Gnutella.

Pros: You don't have to Register to use it, and you can trade Mp3s, avi, movies, and programs. They killed Napster but they can't kill Gnutella network.

Cons: slow - Most users don't put files up for you to get. I had trouble getting files from other users, only 3 out of 5 files downloaded. Remember to share your files!

At its most basic level, this fine utility is a simple file-sharing network that's a breeze to use. You can choose local folders that hold the files you're willing to share, and search for files that others have contributed to the mix. Connection to the main server begins as soon as you open the program, however, it can be slow. This can be pretty irritating too.

The program doesn't provide connection-speed filters but lets you limit searches to specific categories that include audio, video, images, documents, and programs. Beyond that, it offers an integrated chat client and instant messaging with other members of the Filetopia community.

Security measures include strong encryption (256-bit) for both the file server and chat and support for ignoring or banning selected members. You can use the chat features to request and compare file lists from other members, then download the files you don't have. Other features include animated character voice support (via MS Agent), a Novice mode for new users, an online friends list, and logging support. It's Freeware,
